Hey folks,
We did it! We moved the equipment into the new ER! Check out the new place. Thanks go to Harbo, Steph Swaney, Emily Bean and the Guilleux for being there and all you folks who sent encouraging words and checked out the blog!

Shelving is IN!

Below you will find a tour of the new ER as the shelves are mostly in. I've labeled each picture with the type of gear that will fill the shelves this coming Thursday. Again, if you can spare some time to help fill these new shelves with Equipment, please call Joy. Many hands make light work. Lunch provided! Bring your students!
This is the work bench, complete with tools, a mounted vice, and a stool!

Here is the future office/resource area which will have books, maps, desks, etc. Jackie-dog is sitting atop our map viewing/folding table.
On the other side of the divider from the resource area is a ton of shelving -the smaller shelves on the left will have pots, pans, and cook gear. The shelves to the right will have paddling gear.

Just across the bay, we have the backpacking and climbing section. The tall cubbyhole rack will hold our climbing ropes, and the plywood rack on the wall above Jackie will hold all the hardware. Large shelves to the left will hold tents and tarps.

Here we have the medical corner. Our first aid kits will be easily filled and organized on these shelves and counter space.
Just adjacent to the work bench is our trusty ex-medical bin. Now it will be transformed into a beautiful new spice rack complete with paint-job, bottle racks, and in-cabinet lighting for easy filling.

One of the racks we brought from the old ER is seen here. It is specially designed by Harbo, Inc. to hold 12-16 blue tupperware bins of assorted small gear such as gaiters, mittens, and mukluks. It is seen here perpandicular to the garage door.

We have taken great care and delight in making this new ER a place that works, is creative, flexible and enjoyable.
This one last picture is of our new sleeping bag rack - we will be able to hang over 50 sleeping bags here. Under them will sit our winter camping sleds.

Thanks for checking out our progress. Tomorrow we paint, Wednesday we let it dry and Thursday we move the equipment into place, ready to go out and allow transformation to happen in the woods, on the water or in the snow!

Getting Closer

We held a work day today, Monday July 23. Tim Gebhart started a crew of Harbison boys and friends painting the 2nd half of the ceiling. Paul made a trip for wood, etc. and Tim and Joy finished a divider and the last of the insulation!
By the end of the day, the plan was to finish the other divider and back wall and begin painting the floor! Moving day is getting closer. Take a look.

Check out the progress! The whole place is insulated and wires are run for lights and fans. Now, it really is coming together with wood on the ceiling and walls! The room is secure, with a locking door and garage door. It is bright with all the new windows! We still need help, please contact Joy - we are trying to pull together a work crew for the Friday/Saturday after Spring Institute ends. Some manual labor after a week of intellectual stimulation!

The Floor Is DONE! -and much more...

Last Saturday, Tim, Emily, and Joy showed that floor who's boss. It's complete! Check it out - it is screaming for a square dance! Here is Joy putting in the last of the nails.

Then Emily worked on caulking the nail holes in the roof so it doesn't leak on our new floor. Here she is going out onto the roof using a rope for safety!

While Emily was busy on the roof, Tim and Joy did some demo work in the "milk room". We found the most interesting things... like a snake skin from a 10' black snake!!!

I was "floored" when I saw how much work was done in the last week. Thanks to Jonny and Emily Cagwin and Tim G., the sub flooring is finished and looks GREAT! Other volunteers Josh Hayes and James Whitacre = THANK YOU! Windows have been purchased and are waiting to be framed in. We found a huge bay window at Construction Junction that will be spectacular and functional. What a find!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT:
BLITZ BUILD Easter Weekend - We are planning a BLITZ BUILD event Friday, April 6th beginning at 8:30 am thru Saturday, April 7th until 3 pm. Housing/camping options are available for non-locals. Please seriously consider coming for some or all of it and email Sara to RSVP or ask questions.

More progress!

Yesterday was another productive work day at the new ER. We had a crew of 5 getting loads of lumber, cutting and nailing sub-flooring, and beginning to put down the sheets of OSB for the floor!

Most of the day, the work seemed to fly by and we saw great progress... especially using the new nail gun! Hope to see you all there soon. Please email Sara about a day you can come and volunteer! See the calendar at the bottom for upcoming dates. As you can see, the floor is getting close to being finished!

First Step -

- lay down a solid floor! Work began at the new ER Saturday. As we removed the layers of hay, wood and cardboard from the floor, we found a lot of gaps and holes in the old hay storage section of the barn. This is the section we will store most of the equipment, so the floor needs to be solid. We filled in gaps, secured the boards and swept the debris away. It is starting to take shape.

What's the saying about, "Many hands making light work???"
We need many hands. Please consider a few hours or a day you may be able to come. The next work days are Tuesday the 20th and Saturday the 24th. PLEASE COME! Email Sara at equipmentguru@hotmail.com and let her know.

Work on the Outdoor Leadership Team's new ER (Equipment Room) location will begin soon. We are very excited because this new ER promises to be so much more than storage - but a place where trips begin and end, where staff and students spend time getting to know one another and taking time to reflect on the events of a trip. Will you consider joining the team that makes this dream a reality?
